Resampling is a process of transferring an existing raster dataset to a new raster dataset of the same data type. Two typical situations will call for resampling. The first is when two raster data layers representing different features are combined but one has a higher resolution than the other. In this case, the raster data layer with a higher resolution needs to be transformed into a data layer with the same resolution as the other. The second situation is when a raster data layer needs to be transformed into a different coordinate system. For example, a remote sensing image in the original image space needs to be transformed to a projected geographic coordinate system such as the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid system. Resampling creates the values of pixels in the new raster based on the values in the original raster. The methods, which can be used to create the new value, include the nearest neighbor, majority, and averaging methods, and bilinear and cubic convolution interpolation. The specific method to be used depends on the nature of the raster data. Resampling often results in loss of accuracy.
