This entry outlines the development in European art of a new genre, that of national art. The new artistic orientation was taken from the doctrine of nationalism, a philosophy that idealized the nation. National art engaged both with the civic, Enlightenment conceptions of nation and nationalism and with the Romantic, ethnocultural conceptions of nation and nationalism. This entry shows, first, that the visual arts have been potent vehicles of the national idea, and, second, that the creative transformation of the national experience into art transformed both art and the national experience.
