Hate speech and extremist language are discriminatory and violent forms of communication that target marginalized communities through the use of specific semiotic practices. Over the past decade, tools from Corpus Linguistics have been instrumental in studying these forms of language, focusing on their distinctive linguistic and discursive features, how they spread and gain popularity, methods for detection, and possible strategies for prevention and mitigation. This chapter aims to provide an overview of the key issues that corpus linguistics has contributed to revealing with regard to hate speech and extremist language, while also reflecting on the limitations and challenges of such research and proposing potential future directions for study.
