Kleomenes I (reigned ca. 520–490 bce ), Agiad king of Sparta, had one of the most influential reigns of any Spartan king, not only presiding over the rise of Spartan hegemony in the Peloponnese but also inadvertently laying the foundations for what would become Athenian democracy.
