The relationship between discourse and cognition has been complex and, on occasions, even defined as incompatible. Critical perspectives and the social constructivist framework have defined discourse as a social practice and have focused on the public and observable dimension of that practice as determined or conditioned by (and, in turn, constitutive of) sociocultural structures. In this sense, those epistemological commitments were located in opposition to the classic lines of cognitive studies that adopt an internalist perspective on mental processes at the individual level and give primacy to the mental representations that each person manipulates when deploying a discursive interaction. Likewise, the construction and interpretation of meanings and senses are understood in different ways in each of these great frameworks. In addition to the epistemological and theoretical tensions, the methodological approaches in each branch have been very different: qualitative approaches versus experimental and quantitative approaches. During the past decades, however, there have been proposals that try to make both epistemological frameworks compatible and have managed to study discourse from cognitive perspectives, without ignoring the social dimension of any phenomenon of language in use. We propose a brief presentation of some of the theories and debates around the notion of discourse and cognition , to then describe some of the approaches that have managed to successfully link both dimensions.
