Antonio Gramsci was an Italian socialist revolutionary imprisoned under fascist rule. While incarcerated, he composed a series of essays published as the Prison Notebooks . Using coded language to evade censors, he discussed the role of culture in maintaining capitalist hegemony. At the same time, he was optimistic about the people's capacity to resist subjugation. To that end, he recommended that intellectuals organic to the working class engage in specifically revolutionary working‐class education. In communication theory, his most significant influence has been on the field of cultural studies. His theory of hegemony is also useful in understanding communication in social movements.
