Aquae Sextiae Salluviorum (mod. Aix‐en‐Provence, France) was reputedly the earliest Roman foundation in Transalpine (later Narbonese) Gaul. It was the site of Marius’ victory over the German tribes of the Teutones and Ambrones in 102 bce and in the imperial period became one of the most important cities of the region and, eventually, capital of the province of Narbonensis Secunda.
