It is increasingly clear that a profit-driven news system alone cannot provide everyone with the media needed to navigate daily life. As local journalism’s commercial model continues to collapse, public and nonprofit media institutions can serve as informational safety nets. This chapter examines the potential of nonprofit media institutions anchored by public access channels as an untapped resource for local journalism, and presents ways in which public access media can be used to address the lack of local journalism that now exists in many communities.
