In public discourse in Israel, and in many research studies, the term ethnicity is assigned to the differences between Jews whose countries of origin was Europe and the United States (Ashkenazim) and Jews originating from Muslim countries (Mizrahim). Palestinian citizens of Israel are perceived as a national minority. Within Jewish society, the social boundaries and meaning of ethnicity have been negotiated and changed over the years. The political arena has been the most important domain that shaped ethnicity and the focus of struggles over its significance. However, the social carriers of ethnic identity have also been changed. From being regarded as a marginal stigmatized group, the Mizrahim developed alternative social definitions of their identity, challenging the dominant perception of the meaning of their group membership and the definition of what it is to be Israeli.
