Leosthenes the Athenian led the Greek rebellion against Macedonian control in the Lamian War shortly after the death of Alexander the Great. Having been placed in command of a force comprised of mercenaries brought to Greece from Asia and Athenian reinforcements, he conducted several successful attacks and ultimately besieged Antipater in Lamia. During this siege, Leosthenes was struck by a missile and died. His actions in the rebellion against Macedon led to his depiction as a defender of Greece.
