Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is transforming various domains, including geographic information systems (GIS), by enabling AI copilots that assist users in performing geospatial tasks through natural language interaction. These systems automate geoprocessing tasks, generate code, and support map creation. Examples include GIS Copilot, ArcGIS AI Assistant, and Earth Copilot. Key benefits include enhanced accessibility to GIS, increased efficiency and reproducibility, and knowledge discovery from unstructured geospatial data. However, challenges remain related to model bias, spatial reasoning limitations, and ethical concerns. Future directions include integration with real‐time geospatial data streams, domain‐specific fine tuning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of governance frameworks. The emergence of generative AI copilots marks a significant advancement in the evolution of autonomous GIS.
