This chapter looks at the current state and recent history of magazines in Australia, beginning with a discussion of definitional issues. It explores the declining fortunes of the magazine business via a discussion of ownership changes, women’s magazines, circulation and readership. As mainstream, business-to-business (B2B) and custom magazines become ‘magazine media’ created across a number of platforms, the persistence of the printed magazine looks forward to the future in the form of independent (indie) magazines.
