Sellasia, near the northern frontier of Sparta, was the site of a major battle in 222 bce between the Spartan king Kleomenes III and the Macedonian king Antigonos Doson. The latter was at the head of a Hellenic Alliance consisting of Macedon, the Achaian League, and other federations. Doson was victorious and became the first enemy ever to enter Sparta.
