Plato (428/7–348/7 bce ), son of Ariston of Athens, was one of the most important philosophers in antiquity. A student of Socrates, he founded the philosophical community known as the Academy. He travelled several times to Sicily, where he had a sometimes difficult relationship with the tyrants of Syracuse.
