What did it mean to be Greek in the Roman empire? This chapter explores how paideia (i.e., elite Greek education and cultural knowledge) functioned as a defining criterion of Greekness, and how that criterion related to other concepts, such as ancestry and geography, more commonly seen as integral features of ethnicity. Paideia represented the acquired cultural knowledge of an elite and served as the defining criterion of a self-proclaimed ethnic group. Through the medium of Second Sophistic literary culture, paideia allowed elites to fashion a cultural identity that included a new definition of Greek ethnicity.
