Fowling (Greek ixeutike or ornithothera, Latin aucupium ) was widely practiced in the ancient world, to hunt any birds, big (cranes in Verg. G . 1.307) and small, which were then mostly eaten: pictorial representations are to be found already in Egyptian art.
