In order to gain an overview of the variety of religion(s) in the Iranian world in antiquity, scholars need to make difficult choices. Since Iranians rejected the use of writing for literary and religious purposes (relying on oral transmission for both), there are few sources that can help out. Much of the discussion is dominated by attempts to combine the sources we have and give an estimate of the ways in which they are connected.
