Firmly rooted in ecology, urban ecology is the study of urban areas as a series of habitats for human beings and other organisms. It is cross‐disciplinary and may be divided into four key themes: ecology and urban public health, ecology in cities, ecology of cities, and ecology for cities. Urban ecology has diverse roots in social‐spatial analysis, landscape and urban planning, the colonization of urban areas by fauna and flora, and integrated studies of complex socioecological systems. Urban habitats are affected by Anthropocene environmental change, especially anthropogenic soils and substrates. Debates center around the nature of the rural to urban transition, the impact of cultural and social preferences on the character of urban ecosystems, the valuation of urban ecosystem services, ways of developing holistic appraisals of climate change on biota, and social justice in terms of the relative gains from ecosystem services and disservices in cities in different parts of the world.
