Miltiades (ca. 550–489 bce ), son of Kimon, a prominent Athenian aristocrat, spent several decades ruling the Thracian Chersonese (Gallipoli) Peninsula before returning to Athens, to lead the Athenians against the Persians at Marathon in 490. Herodotus tells his story in several places, not always in chronological order (6.34–41, 103–111, 132–140).
