This chapter looks into how the postindependence state has used language and education policies in attempts to change the Hunter-Gatherer Hadzabe. It argues that the Hadzabe are aware of the serious dangers posed by the intended changes, that they have resisted them, and goes on resisting them until the community becomes completely permeated by the opposing ideology. The role of ensuring this rapid development in Tanzania has been assigned for the most part to education and language. The peasant/worker categorization represents a clear attempt by the state to define a generalized basis for identification within the nation, but since independence it has undermined the existence of societies within Tanzanian territory that fall outside this simplified construct. The chapter explain the mode of encounter between the Tanzanian state and the hunter-gatherer Hadzabe people in the state&s;s endeavor to transform the Hadzabe into a sedentary agricultural community.
