Each of ten commonly watched program types is here discussed for its main meanings and attractions, and for the reactions it evokes from various audience groups. For many purposes, these ten types can be considered as the primary forms of TV entertainment. They do not readily change in appropriateness or appeal. What does change are the specific programs that most successfully represent each type at any particular moment of time and the relative balance among the ten different types.
