Roman cavalry (Latin equitatus Romanus ) represented the mounted force of the Roman army from the very early stages of Rome to the end of the Eastern Roman Empire. Over the centuries, it went through different phases of organization, from an auxiliary and less important corps, whose purpose was to defend the wings of the infantry battle front, to large mobile regiments which could strike decisively to protect parts of the empire that were threatened.
