This article explores the various techniques for measuring commodities that started during the Bronze Age. It shows that materials which cannot be properly ‘counted’ (e.g. power and liquids) were quantified by weighing or measuring volume. The article references several written and archaeological sources to study the range of items that were weighed during the Bronze Age and to determine the purpose of weighing. Next, the article briefly describes some weighing and metrological systems, and examines the close relationship of weighing with commodification and monetisation. The article centres on weighing equipment (balances and weights).
