The quarter century following the end of the Second World War is often called the Golden Age of capitalism, in light of the relatively rapid and stable economic growth in the major industrialized capitalist countries in that period. However, that was by no means the only long period of relative prosperity in world capitalist history. Two others that have been identified ran from the mid-1840s to the mid-1870s and the mid-1890s to 1913 (Mandel 1975: 122; Gordon et al. 1982: 9). The intervals between these vigorous long-term expansions have seen poorer economic performance by a variety of measures. This alternation between long periods of rapid growth and long periods of slow or no growth has led some analysts to refer to ‘long swings’ in capitalist economies.1
