The NCVS is one of the two national crime measures that currently gathers information on attempted and completed rape, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault, personal larceny (purse snatching and pickpocketing), burglary, motor vehicle theft, and property theft. The use of the survey for the purposes of testing and development of victimology theory has been somewhat limited in recent years. Nonetheless, ongoing changes to the survey designed to produce a stronger, more theoretically relevant NCVS are under way.
