The relationship between transportation and land use remains complex, particularly when they are poorly synchronized and cause externalities such as congestion, air pollution, and environmental damage. This entry provides an overview of the changing interactions between transportation and land use as seen in a historical context by reviewing theories, models, and the recent empirical evidence from the field of transportation. The entry concludes with two key points: first, that the integration of information and communication technology effects is required to better understand the link between transportation and land use; and, second, that transit‐oriented development (TOD) remains a possibility for utilizing existing suburban areas more effectively to mitigate externalities arising from the dominance of automobile‐oriented land‐use patterns.
