Smyrna (modern Izmir) is a Greek city located on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. It was allegedly founded by Aiolians in the eleventh century bce , but Ionians occupied the city in the seventh century bce and the Lydians destroyed it in the sixth century bce . Legend says that the city was refounded by Alexander the Great and, during the Roman period, Smyrna became a great metropolis, frequently visited by Roman governors and emperors, as well as by sophists and scientists of international prestige. In the midst of this multicultural atmosphere, Christianity gained ground as early as the first century ce .
