Mantinea was a city in northeastern Arcadia. As one of the larger Peloponnesian poleis , it became a member of major regional alliances while also pursuing its own regional ambitions. This resulted in repeated conflicts with its southern neighbor Tegea and hegemonic powers, and Mantinea was destroyed and rebuilt on the same site twice (385/70 and 223 BCE ).
