The principal horizontal division in society between the fourth and seventh centuries ce was between those whose wealth, privilege, and status placed them in the category of “the powerful” or “the notable,” and everyone else. This division has conventionally been expressed in terms of a distinction between honestiores and humiliores , but equivalent expressions appear in a variety of contexts.
