Egyptomania is generally taken to mean more than just an intense fascination or mania for all things Egyptian, a concept better described as Egyptophilia. Egyptomania refers rather to the modifying rather than simply copying of Egyptian forms, often providing new symbolic meanings never inherent in the Egyptian originals.
