The desire for proximity with celebrities has become commonplace in our fame-saturated culture. Similarly, meeting other fans face to face has been a part of being a fan long before the earliest science fiction fan gatherings. More recently, the desire to be physically present at locations related to the object of fandom has been recognized as another growing expression of fandom in the real world. This chapter suggests that the more “virtual” fandom becomes, the more important physical space in which to perform one's fandom identity and interact with other fans becomes. This chapter discusses two different types of real world spaces––fan conventions and fan pilgrimage sites––as evidence of a growing desire for “behind the scenes” experiences and intimate interactions with both objects of fandom and other fans that cannot be achieved online.
