The Latin word saltus indicates, in its broader sense and particularly in historical texts, uncultivated areas, such as woods, mountain areas, and impracticable places (e.g., Livy 10.24.6). But a more specialized meaning is also attested, indicating private properties mainly used for pasture (Varro Ling . 5.36; Ov. Fast . 5.282–9), or places where extensive animal rearing occurs ( pastio agrestis : Varro Rust . 3.1.8), and so where shepherds and herds live (Cic. Tog . cand . 11).
