Gaugamela was the site of the decisive battle in Alexander the Great's war against Darius III, the last Achaemenid king. With superior numbers and resources, Darius attempted to use the geography of the plain to his advantage and to outflank Alexander's wings. After repelling several attacks and stretching Darius’ front line, Alexander led a charge of the Companion cavalry through a gap in the ranks and put Darius to flight. The Achaemenid capitals were abandoned to Alexander and Darius was in the end arrested and executed by his satraps.
