John Lydus (ca. 490–554 ce ) is known to us through his three extant works – the treatises De mensibus (“On the months”) and De ostentis (“On omens”), dealing with Roman and other calendars and festivals and with divinatory practices and astrology, respectively, and De magistratibus (“On the magistracies”), an idiosyncratic institutional history of the imperial administration – that contain a wealth of antiquarian detail and provide valuable perspectives into the interests and aspirations of highly educated imperial bureaucrats.
