The cultural turn describes a broad set of shifts in the social sciences and humanities, which blossomed from the 1970s to the early 2000s. In geography, the cultural turn's impact was felt widely and drew heavily on these shifts, impacting – among others – contemporary cultural geography , including landscape studies; economic geographies of labor, regulation, innovation, agglomeration, culture industries, urban economic geography, and studies of the capitalist state; and geopolitics , involving Gramscian and Foucauldian international relations, scale and activism, development, and neoliberalism. This turn embodies several tensions between determining systems and individual agency. Likewise, culture and the cultural have invited critique and challenges from approaches that question the ontological status of culture, the relevance of meaning and representation, and the turn's human‐centered aspects. Yet, the cultural turn persists with increasingly materialist engagements with Gramsci, systems of meaning, capitalist processes, and social power in everyday life.
