Urban politics have been defined in a variety of ways. Castells's “classic” definition of urban politics, grounded in collective consumption issues, gave way to a new urban politics of economic growth, and more recently to a diverse range of notions. Urban politics are highly complex and cannot be reduced to processes making and operating within a specific areal unit, such as a city.
