Kolophon was one of the most prominent early Greek settlements in Ionia (western Asia Minor). The synoikismos of the inhabitants of Kolophon and Lebedos in connection with the refoundation of Ephesos (Asinoeia) by king Lysimachos in the early Hellenistic period is well known. Little is known about the archaeology of Kolophon. Several tumuli of the Geometric period have been excavated as well as a sanctuary of Meter. Recent survey activities provide information about the extent of the settlement.
