Located in northwestern Romania, Porolissum (modern‐day Moigrad) was established in 106 CE under Trajan. It served as the primary military base in the hierarchy of the Roman defensive network in northwestern Dacia, with secondary fortresses located at Tihǎu, Romita‐Certiae, Romanaşi, and Buciumi. In addition to protecting a major corridor through the Carpathian Mountains, Porolissum's location affords a commanding view of a 30 km stretch of the Roman limes and offers a line of vision toward one of the most important native Dacian sites, Şimleu Silvaniei, some 25 km to the west, probably the Dacidava mentioned by Claudius Ptolemaeus ( Geography 3.8 Dacia).
