Dealing with its international aspects, histories of abolition tend to concentrate primarily on its Anglo-American dimension as a mutually reinforcing ‘connection’, rather than as a subject for comparative national analysis. 1 In this context other European colonial powers are treated as peripheral. French anti-slavery is duly accorded recognition in the intellectual history of pre-abolitionism, and a brief dramatic role in the French Revolutionary era. Thereafter French abolitionists disappear into oblivion, or remain in the unfolding drama as modest members of the chorus. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
