Prejudice is the prejudgment of a person or idea based on perceived group association. Prejudice, an attitude, should be distinguished from discrimination, a behavior. Prejudice has been a subject of research since the early 1900s, when social scientists began to investigate its role in antisemitic and anti‐immigrant sentiment. Linked to stereotyping and authoritarianism, prejudice has manifested differently in different time periods, and its effects have prompted numerous suggestions for solutions including education, increased contact between groups, and use of media as a tool to decrease levels of prejudice.
