Grain was of vital importance to the ancient Mediterranean world. Not only did grain provide the majority of the caloric food intake for the inhabitants of the entire ancient Mediterranean basin, but it has been estimated that up to 75 percent of the average ancient Mediterranean diet was made up of cereals.
