The Lydian river Paktolos, today Sart Çayı, flows from the Tmolos through Sardis and feeds the Hermos. In Antiquity, it was renowned for containing gold and electrum which was used for the first coinage of the Lydian kings and caused their proverbial wealth. In Strabo's time, the gold was exhausted (Strabo 13.1.23, 13.4.5), but the Pactoli liquores (Prop. 1.14.11) persisted as literary topos in Roman poetry.
