Problem‐oriented policing uses various methods to respond to and prevent an array of citizen concerns. Herman Goldstein's introduction of problem‐oriented policing in 1979 marked the beginning of a shift in how police viewed their responsibilities and measured their successes and provided a channel for police and community collaboration. Problem‐oriented policing takes many forms and is often part of community policing, broken windows policing, and hot‐spotting. Innovations in technologies and police management will continue to improve the profession's practice of problem‐oriented policing.
