Xenophanes of Colophon (sixth century BCE ) famously observed that if horses had gods, their gods would look like horses. This observation was provoked by the moral frailty of Homer's too human gods, and growing critical scrutiny of anthropomorphic religious practices in general. As philosophers came to define a world of universal laws, Homeric‐style deities indulging themselves on Olympos became increasingly suspect.
