Humanities Theory offers a new framework for understanding the place of the humanities in the culture at large and as a transdisciplinary project with identifiable aims, practices, and theoretical frameworks. Taking a long historical view, Simon During analyses the cultural and intellectual history of the humanities, both within and outside the academy, arguing for a rich “humanities world” characterized by amateur and scholarly forms. Focusing on the present institutional and intellectual condition of the humanities, Amanda Anderson challenges media representations of the field and redirects attention toward its distinctive theoretical and normative contributions, placing the work of the humanities within the broader context of the university. Both essays present the humanities as plural and as oriented toward openness, a will to truthfulness, and a willingness to examine questions of value.
