[Heb ḥănȏk]. 1. Son of Cain and father of Irad (Gen 4:17–18). The genealogical context suggests that Enoch (rather than Cain) may have been the builder of the city which he named after his son, Irad (Cassuto 1961: 229–31; GHBW, 139–41; Sasson 1978: 174; Miller 1985: 241–42 n. 9; but cf. Sawyer 1986
