Resumo

This short story uses satire to depict political and cultural posturing at the American Anthropological Association annual meetings. The story describes the encounter of a female working-class Mexican American graduate student with upper-middle-class Anglo professors and the miscommunications that ensue. The story illustrates and parodies Anglo-Mexican ethnic relations within the academy and along the U.S. Mexico border from the standpoint of a Chicana graduate student. The underlying theme of the work is the attraction (and repulsion) Mexican Americans feel for Anglo culture and vice versa as well as the need for intellectuals to take themselves less seriously.
