This chapter explores prefigurative politics in anarchist, Marxist and syndicalist theory and strategy. It discusses what prefigurative politics is; the role it has played in the world’s socialist movements; the main arguments for why prefiguration is necessary for achieving a free, equal and democratic society; the importance of certain kinds of intersectionality; and debates about the usefulness of taking over the existing state. If we are ever to reach a free future society, prefigurative politics must be at the core of our efforts.
