This dossier seeks to analyze the Jesuit missions in Spanish America (17th–18th centuries) from a global and decentralized perspective. The specific objectives are clear: to move away from traditional narratives that often present an idealized view of daily life in the reduction, to emphasize frontier spaces where political power was constantly negotiated and where there was an interaction between the global and the local, and to highlight the ability of their inhabitants to use the missionary structure to their own advantage. Based on the articles presented here, this publication invites readers to understand the mission not as a closed space, but as a laboratory of social and political interaction that was fundamental to the expansion of the Spanish Monarchy along its American frontiers.
