The author begins by outlining the basic conditions of the practice of baptism from the standpoint of aesthetics, the history of the liturgy and theology. Against this backdrop, he discusses changes in the last decades and the pastoral problems resulting from these. He concludes by describing those innovations which show baptism's processual character and its potential for biographical interpretation.
